Unexpected details

After hours (and hours) of stenciling our bathroom, I swore I would never stencil a wall again. It must be like childbirth, though.  You forget how painful it is until you do it again. Because, as you can see, I broke my promise and stenciled our entrance hallway.

And, I'm not mad about it.

Entrances are the first impression of your home, and I knew I wanted ours to make a statement and give a preview of the style throughout the rest of the house.   I went with this Royal Design Studio Contempro Trellis stencil and used a navy paint.  It was important for me to have a bit of repetition from my blue and white chinoiserie pottery in our living room, but I didn't want an exact duplicate.   This stencil fit the bill and, unlike wallpaper, I can easily change it up if I get bored.  Which isn't happening anytime soon, though....

I love the geometric details in an unexpected place.  It was certainly worth the time and, coming in at under $45 for the whole project, absolutely worth the cost.

I realize this is the first time I've shared a picture of our light fixture in our living room.  This mid century modern flushmount sputnik by Lucent Lightshop is a stunner, as is every other light in Sarah's shop.  If you've been around for a while, you know that I love a layered look and the collection of the masculine industrial light, softer chinoiserie pieces, and geometric stencil creates the eclectic mix I am always striving for.

If you're hesitant to stencil a whole room like we did in our bathroom, maybe I've swayed you with this smaller space. I'm convinced there is no better, or more economic way, to create a big visual impact on your walls than stenciling.  Royal Design Studio has a ton of awesome stencils, and gives you a small free seasonal stencil with every purchase and run discount codes often (try YHL10 for 10% off).

Believe it or not, I have another stenciling project on the docket for our house.  One of my best friends just closed on her first home and we've already picked out a stencil and the wall we're going to tackle.  I guess it's about time I revoke my statement that I would never stencil again ;)
